Evaluate your cycle time frequency distribution. Forecast task completion times. Monitor your delivery performance.
The Cycle Time Histogram for Trello shows the frequency distribution of the completion times of each task in your workflow. The vertical axis displays the frequency and the horizontal axis shows your cycle times. By evaluating your cycle time distribution, you’ll be able to determine the variability in your process.
A Cycle Time Histogram that is shaped with a big hump on the left, then a very long tail to the right is a warning sign. This indicates that your cycle time varies significantly and your process is inconsistent. To achieve more consistent delivery times, the first step is to consider establishing a WIP-limited pull system.
The Cycle Time Histogram for Trello provides the ability to forecast likely delivery times by using past cycle time data. Percentile lines show the certainty of a task being completed within specific cycle time. Higher percentile lines indicate a higher likelihood of punctually delivering your work.
The percentile lines can be used to define your service level agreements. Firstly, discuss the different levels of confidence with your clients and stakeholders, then base your SLAs on their optimum comfort level. At first, we would recommend using the 85th percentile line.
The average cycle time is an indicator of performance. In the Cycle Time Histogram for Trello, you can see the mean, median and mode average cycle times, as well as how their trends move over time. Ideally, the lines should remain close, progress at an even rate, or go down.
Choose your average and monitor the profile of its line. If the line rises, this is a warning that your team needs more time to deliver their tasks. Consider reevaluating your WIP limits or alter your process policies in order to establish a faster delivery workflow.
